The Fringe Skirt

julie | skirts | Monday, 30 June 2008

Fringe is a current obsession of mine.  Judging by recent posts on many of my favorite blogs, I’m aware that I am not alone in my love of all things fringed.  Until recently I’d kind of relegated my fringe to things like a leather bag, or maybe some Minnetonkas.  In the interest of expanding upon my fringed choices, I purchased a black fringed skirt from Express.  I do not typically do much shopping at Express, but I had seen this particular black skirt staring at me from the store window on previous occasions and I’d always thought it was cute.  It wasn’t until I was preparing to go out dancing with a bunch of friends that I realized the full capabilities of a skirt like this.  You see, when you wear a fringed skirt and you dance in it, it’s almost as good as when you were a little girl twirling round and round in your fullest “church dress”.  Their is this great swishy movement that makes dancing all the more fun.

I wore mine with a tank and some killer heels, but I’ve been thinking that this skirt has many more possibilities that I’d originally thought.  I think it would be great to juxtapose the relative fanciness of the skirt with a beat-up T-shirt and some sturdy heels.  The skirt fits like a bandage skirt, so it really is quite versatile.  Above, I’ve illustrated some ways that I think the skirt could be worn.

Express is also carrying a strapless dress version of this piece.  Forever 21 has a dress version too.  Theirs has a sheer mesh top.

Gucci’s New “Babouska” Shoes Are Breaking My Heart

julie | what I want now | Friday, 27 June 2008

The new “Babouska” studded shoes from Gucci are killing me softly.  We’ve been seeing studded pieces, from belts, to shoes, to bags, for quite some time, but this new spin on the trend, witht the gold circular studs, is just fabulous.  I could imagine wearing all three of these iterations of the shoe in so many different and wonderful ways.

Mary Kate at The Wackness premier in NYC

julie | celebrity fashion | Friday, 27 June 2008

MK looked so pretty and fresh at the premier of her new film The Wackness at The Gramercy Hotel in New York on Wednesday.  Her hair and makeup look so natural and pretty.  I love this soft, vintagey flowered dress and, of course, she’s styled it perfectly.  Her amazing cuff is all the jewelry she needs.  The silky drawstring bag adds to the vintage appeal and her black peep toes anchor the whole look and keep the total look from being too frilly.

Red Tights Please!

julie | trend alert, where to get the trend | Thursday, 26 June 2008

After the lasting popularity of black tights (and their many counter parts), it was exciting to see some designers sending bright red tights down the runways recently.  I thought this look had possibilities, but I was a little skeptical as to whether an adult woman could pull it off in real life without looking too childish.  So, I’ve been keeping my eyes peeled for good examples of how to pull them off and I think I’ve found some convincing evidence to prove that these red tights can be quite chic and wearable.

First let’s take a look at some of the runway looks:

Zac Posen

Viktor + Rolph

Erin Fetherston

And now, some street style pics of girls rocking the look:

This last outift is my favorite.  I love every element of this look!  I don’t think it would too difficult to emulate.  If you’re looking for red tights, I suggest going to welovecolors.com for the greatest selection of colors.

Agent 99’s cream leather motorcyle jacket from Get Smart

julie | Inspired by a movie character, celebrity fashion | Wednesday, 25 June 2008

Ok, one other post about Anne Hathaway’s wardrobe in the Get Smart movie :)  I am mildly obsessed with jackets.  This creamy leather jacket with the amazing zipper detailing is kind of driving me nuts.  I want it!  Seeing it reminded me of the Rick Owens jacket that I’ve been trying to forget about for quite some time.

It is divine isn’t it?  The zips and the ruffly bottom….  If only I had the thousands of dollars that is costs.

And then there’s this from 3.1 Phillip Lim

A girl can dream right?  I’m going to keep my eye out for a less exorbitant version.  Anyone have any ideas?  I’d love to hear them.

Anne Hathaway as Agent 99 in Get Smart

julie | Inspired by a movie character, celebrity fashion | Wednesday, 25 June 2008

I saw Get Smart last night and I chuckled the whole way through.  Anne Hathaway was stunning as Agent 99.  She had a pretty smart wardrobe too.  I was inspired by her crisp white trench coat paired with white Chanel sunglasses and a white, quilted Chanel chain strap bag.  She finished her look with white slim pants and killer black stilettos.  I thought I’d look for similar items in a couple of different price points so we can all get some secret agent style.

Right next to the movie poster you’ll see the Chanel sunglasses and Chanel bag along with a trench from 3.1 Phillip Lim.  Obviously, this is the more expensive version of the look.  The trench is available at brownsfashion.com.  The next grouping shows two cute trench-style coats, some very chic white sunnies and a black, quilted, chain strap bag all from Forever 21.   Unfortunately, this bag doesn’t come in white, but I did find a nice vanilla leather bag with great utility pockets from MICHAEL by Michael Kors available at Nordstrom.

The white denim pants I used are from Wet Seal and the peep toes are Louboutins.

Chloe’s Architectural Heel Done By Forever 21

julie | where to get the trend | Tuesday, 24 June 2008

Forever 21 strikes again!  This Chloe patent leather slingback with innovative pink heel was a big hit on the runway.  Net-a-porter was selling them for $645 and has just a couple of sizes left for $387.

Being ever in the know, Forever 21 is now carrying an eerily similar pair for a mere $27.80.  This recessionista is not mad!

Socks Galore!

julie | trend alert | Tuesday, 24 June 2008

I have to admit that the only actual socks I’ve owned in the last several years have been white ankle socks strictly for use at the gym.  As the summer weather has arrived, I’ve been feeling kind of naked without my thick black tights that were such a staple in my fall/winter wardrobe.  So, I wondered whether I should expand my sock collection to include some new varieties.

I’ve noticed some crazy combinations and I’m not sure I’m willing to wear them on a regular basis, but as I looked further, I found some adorable looks that I think are worth checking out.

from a Spring issue of Teen Vogue

Some really great shots taken from Altamira NYC.  Whether ankle, knee, or above the knee, these can look quite cute and come in a variety of colors and shades.

And of course:

I had to include a photo of the incomparable Susie Bubble who is known for her amazing ability to mix and match the unusual and unique with aplomb.  She sports legwear of all varieties and looks good doing it.

If you’re shopping for socks, American Apparel has some cute ones.

Hyper Color?!

julie | where to get the trend | Monday, 23 June 2008

Remeber how rad Hyper Color t-shirts were?  When they were popular, I was young enough to not think about the possibly embarassing ramifications of wearing a t-shirt that was sensitive to body heat.  Now, I’m wondering whether I want to wear a shirt that’s bright pink everywhere except for those two large white circles around my arm pits.  Did somebody forget her anti-perspirant today?

Ahem, well if you don’t harbor those fears, look to the ever innovative American Apparel for a color change T of your own.

Fedoras Have Taken Over!

julie | celebrity fashion, where to get the trend | Monday, 23 June 2008

Wow!  Two people I didn’t really expect to hop onto the fedora bandwagon.  Reese Witherspoon always looks nice, but I didn’t really think this was her style.  Poor little Archuletta.  I wonder if he ever gets to pick out his own clothes.  This just doesn’t look natural to me.

The fedora is an enduring trend and it’s nice for keeping the sun off of our delicate faces in summer.  If you’re looking for an affordable one, check out Urban Outfitters
