Swagger Like Us

julie | Inspired by a Song, celebrity fashion | Wednesday, 24 September 2008

Time for another round of “Inspired By A Song”!!  The song is “Swagger Like Us” by T.I. featuring M.I.A., Jay-Z, Kanye West and LIl Wayne.  I like that M.I.A. is involved in all these interesting side projects.  She’s getting exposure to audiences that probably never would’ve heard her music otherwise.  The track is sic, so I can’t get it out of my head.

M.I.A. definitely has a style of her own.

Some of the stuff she wears would be - how should I say this - a little much for me in my everyday life.  But, I think she’s cool and the music does inspire me to jump out of my comfort zone a little bit.  Here is the look I chose:

skinny jeans or shiny leggings, a t-shirt (Delia’s) with an over-size grandpa cardigan (Alloy), some crazy high-top Nike Dunks (sneakerhead.com), and some funky accessories.  The sunglasses are from Fredflare.com and the thick chain necklace, which is a play on the old school hip-hop chains, is from Patricia Field’s line (patriciafield.com - you know, the one who did the Sex and the City wardrobe).  Oh, the hat is Topshop and the cuff is Claire’s.

Jazmine Sullivan - Baby I Need You Bad

julie | Inspired by a Song | Wednesday, 16 July 2008

Time for another “Inspired By A Song” post!  It seems like it’s been awhile, but I’ve been waiting for just the right song to invade my head space.  This edition is brought to you by the soulful Jazmine Sullivan and her song “Baby I Need You Bad” featuring Missy Elliott.  This song reminds me a little of Lauryn Hill.  It’s a perfect summer song and it inspires me to put on something earthy, beautiful and easy.

Check out the song:

“In Love With A Girl” by Gavin Degraw

julie | Inspired by a Song | Tuesday, 20 May 2008

I was glad to hear that Gavin Degraw was back on the scene.  I liked him a few years ago when he first came out.  He has that cool, laid back, singer-songwriter vibe.  I’d like to think that if were a famous musician, I’d be cool like that.  I like his new song.  It has been seared in my brain for at least a week, much to the annoyance of friends and family who have had to suffer through my random singing of it. Check out the video:

This song is the type of song that puts me in the mood to go hangout with friends in the sunshine.  I’d like to sit outside at some dive bar on the beach after work on a Friday and hear this song.  I’d wear this. Ok, I know the heels aren’t appropriate if you really were at a dive bar by the beach.  That’s why I put the Converse in too!  A girl never knows where she might end up.  That’s why I keep 5 or 6 various pairs of shoes in my car at all times.

“Valerie”

Yeah, a new “Inspired by a song” post!  I think these are some of my favorite posts to do because I get so excited about the music.  This song is from Mark Ronson’s amazing album entitled “Versions”.  There are lots of great remakes on this CD.  I highly recommend it.  This song is a favorite of mine because it’s sung by Amy Winehouse, who I really love.

Check out the song:

This song is so upbeat it makes me want to go out dancing.  It seriously puts me in a good mood everytime I hear it.  So check out the outfit that this inspires:

I love the punches of bright color contrasted with the black and grey.  Now just add massive doses of black eyeliner and your very own version of the beehive.

Skirt - Topshop, tank - WetSeal, boots - LaRedoute, bag - Balenciaga, sunnies - Delia’s, bracelets - Nordstrom.

“Dream”

julie | Inspired by a Song | Tuesday, 08 April 2008

This is the second installment of the “Inspired by a Song” series that I decided to do on a somewhat regular basis.  This song is by Alice Smith.  She has an amazing voice.  Some of you may have seen her perform on Ellen or one of the late night talk shows.  A clip of this song was also used on an episode of Entourage.  There doesn’t seem to be an actual video for this song, so there isn’t really anything to watch in this clip, but you can hear the song:

Beautiful right? Now here is the look this song inspires:

It’s dreamy isn’t it?  I love the color and the smart cut of a great pencil skirt.  This one has a twist because of the fab color.  The tank is a great way to do the highlighter (or neon) trend that I’m sure you’ve been noticing.  The tank and the skirt are very affordable and can be found at wetseal.com.  The glasses which are a cute take on the Wayfarer trend are from Delias, as is the purse.  The scarf and gold cuff are from Topshop.  Those amazing sandals are from Stuart Weitzman and can be purchased at Nordstrom.

You could also do a cheaper version of the shoe.  Here’s one I love from Steve Madden:

Hang Me Up to Dry

Music is an important part of my life. It really has the power to influence my entire mood. Since I’m usually mildly obsessed with at least one song at any given time, I thought it might be fun to do some posts about those particular songs and the types of moods they create and, as a result, the kinds of outfits they inspire.

The first song I’m going to use is not a super-new song or anything but it is one that I’ve been listening to a lot lately and that always affects me when I hear it. It is just such a good rock song. Unfortunately, Youtube won’t let me embed the original video for the song. Anyway, check out the song and then the clothes it inspires below.

It’s a little haphazard maybe, but I love, love, love the shoes! I just can’t get over them and they are really the key element here. The skinny gray jeans are the perfect complement to the shoes. I would throw on the plaid shirt if it was chilly. I love the kind of southwest vibe of the scarf. The colorful stack of bangles is kind of a must for me. I always have an armful of bracelets on.

What do you think? Does music inspire you to put together certain outfits? What music are you inspired by now? I welcome your comments.
