Lace-up Booties Like Rumi’s

julie | trend alert, where to get the trend | Thursday, 04 September 2008

I had to use that title cuz it rhymes.  Anyhoo, I love analyzing all the interesting footwear that seems to be appearing this season.  The so-ugly-it’s-awesome look is really making a break through!  Amazing fashion-blogger Rumi from Fashiontoast is a great supporter of the ugly-cool shoes.  Here is a great pic of her in her infamous red/orange Chloe doc wedges:

She is so cute, she can pull off anything and I love the way she styles these.  In a recent post, she says that she’s gotten tons of emails about them from people wanting to know where to get them.   (she has a link on her post, if you click above)  They are around $600.

I recently found some black lace-up wedge ankle booties by Tapeet that have a similar feel, if you’re interested.

I would imagine that most people would find these a little more wearable than the orangey-red Chloes.  These aren’t cheap either, but they’re less than the Chloes.

What ugly-chic shoes do you love?

Martin Margiela L’Incognito Sunglasses

julie | celebrity fashion, trend alert | Sunday, 31 August 2008

When I first saw these sunglasses by Martin Margiela, I thought they were cool and witty.  No surprise coming from a smart label like Margiela.  I love how they remind you of the black bars that fashion magazines put over the eyes of the fashion disasters.

As soon as I saw them, I thought of these

The shutter shades that Kanye has been wearing for awhile now.  I told my boyfriend that I thought Kanye might be the first to switch up his style by wearing the Margielas.

It looks like I was close, but Pharell beat him to the punch.  Check out this video.  It’s the Everybody Nose Remix from NERD, and it features everyone and their mom.  Kanye is in it.  I was happy to see Pusha from the Clipse too.  Pharell wears the glasses and he looks good doing it.  Enjoy!

Emmy Rossum in Leather by Paige Black Label

julie | celebrity fashion, trend alert | Friday, 29 August 2008

I love that leather is so big for the fall/winter.  It’s so much fun because it kind of reminds me of the over-the-top looks from the 80s and 90s, but it’s done in a fresh way.

Remember that movie Can’t Buy Me Love where Patrick Dempsey, who was the hottest geek, was in love with the popular girl, and he pays her to make him cool and they inevitably fall in love?  If you’ve forgotten, check out the trailer.  It’ll bring it all back to you.

Awesome right?!  Well, if you’ll remember, Cindi wore a white suede, super expensive outfit that she’d secretly borrowed from her mother for a big party and then some dumb jock made her spill red wine all over it.  That was how she got herself in the fix of needing Dempsey’s money in the first place.  When I was a kid, that outfit seemed like the hottest, most luxurious thing ever.  I couldn’t wait until I was old enough to don leather from head to toe.  Well, now that I’m grown, I think I’d rather do it like Emmy Rossum did.

She looks pretty cool in all leather.  This dress is from a label that I didn’t know existed.  Apparently Paige Premium Denim has started a Black Label that is more “edgy, but sophisticated” and ranges from $230-1000.  The line became available in stores this month.  I guess I missed that news flash.

Inspired By Gucci

julie | trend alert, what I want now, where to get the trend | Wednesday, 23 July 2008

Today I was reminded of the Gucci Fall runways and I thought that since this was one of my favorite collections, and Fall is around the corner, I ought to begin looking for some pieces that will provide me with a Gucci-ish look.

Here are some pics I used for inspiration:

I love these looks!  The boots have the fringe that has been such a big hit as of late.  The whole thing is very embellished.  I love to embellish, probably too much at times, but this look seems to be conducive to adding lots of sparkly finishing touches.  Unfortunately, these particular boots are about $2,000.  If you’ve got that kind of cash, you can find them here.  The other pieces in these looks are quite expensive as well so I’ve made it my task to find some pieces that could give you the same feel for a lot less.

Here’s what I’ve found:

You could start with your favorite black skinnies (if you happen to have velvet ones, so much the better), then add some gold chain belts.  You could probably find something great if you really hunted at a thrift store, or you could pretty easily make this a DIY.  I found this intricate gold belt by Christian Audigier on zappos for about $135.  Next, I added a detailed, tailored jacket.  Again, if you hunted at vintage and thrift stores, you might be able to find one with some great brocade detailing.  To keep it simple, I went with this military jacket from Topshop.  I added two pins to it to add some color and extra detail.  These pins are both from Forever 21, as are the two necklaces off to the side.  I found two boot choices that I thought would work well.  The first is the fringed “Arizona” boot from Steve Madden available on their website ($110).  The second pair are by Gabriella Rocha and can be found at zappos ($85).  The sunglasses I found are by Diesel and can be purchased at zappos for $144.

The new Ankle Grazing Pant Length - For Men

julie | trend alert | Thursday, 17 July 2008

Watch out ladies!  The men are gettin all expirimental on us.

I have to say that I don’t usually pay all that much attention to men’s fashion.  I know, I know, it’s just that it’s usually not that interesting.  Maybe it has something to do with the fact that my own boyfriend really isn’t that interested in fashion.  But when the men start stepping up and doing something new, I take notice and give credit where credit is due.  I’ve been seeing pics like the above popping up all over the internet.  I didn’t expect that so many guys would be daring enough to give this look a try.  Nor did I expect to see it so well executed.  Bravo, I say!

Red Tights Please!

julie | trend alert, where to get the trend | Thursday, 26 June 2008

After the lasting popularity of black tights (and their many counter parts), it was exciting to see some designers sending bright red tights down the runways recently.  I thought this look had possibilities, but I was a little skeptical as to whether an adult woman could pull it off in real life without looking too childish.  So, I’ve been keeping my eyes peeled for good examples of how to pull them off and I think I’ve found some convincing evidence to prove that these red tights can be quite chic and wearable.

First let’s take a look at some of the runway looks:

Zac Posen

Viktor + Rolph

Erin Fetherston

And now, some street style pics of girls rocking the look:

This last outift is my favorite.  I love every element of this look!  I don’t think it would too difficult to emulate.  If you’re looking for red tights, I suggest going to welovecolors.com for the greatest selection of colors.

Socks Galore!

julie | trend alert | Tuesday, 24 June 2008

I have to admit that the only actual socks I’ve owned in the last several years have been white ankle socks strictly for use at the gym.  As the summer weather has arrived, I’ve been feeling kind of naked without my thick black tights that were such a staple in my fall/winter wardrobe.  So, I wondered whether I should expand my sock collection to include some new varieties.

I’ve noticed some crazy combinations and I’m not sure I’m willing to wear them on a regular basis, but as I looked further, I found some adorable looks that I think are worth checking out.

from a Spring issue of Teen Vogue

Some really great shots taken from Altamira NYC.  Whether ankle, knee, or above the knee, these can look quite cute and come in a variety of colors and shades.

And of course:

I had to include a photo of the incomparable Susie Bubble who is known for her amazing ability to mix and match the unusual and unique with aplomb.  She sports legwear of all varieties and looks good doing it.

If you’re shopping for socks, American Apparel has some cute ones.

Shredded Much?

julie | celebrity fashion, trend alert | Friday, 13 June 2008

I’m sensing a theme here.  First Alexander Wang was showing the shredded tights on the runways.

Just the other day we saw Agyness Deyn in her shredded denim,

and then, as I was perusing the always brilliant Style Bubble, I saw more evidence of shredding.

This photo is from Susie’s page and it is part of Pudel’s AW08/09 collection.  Susie then shows some Topshop looks that will be arriving in the next season.  I spy more shredded-ness.  What do you think?  Will you embrace this trend?  I think I would be interested to a degree somewhat less than what Agy demonstrates.

Ashley Olsen Demonstrates the Summer Uniform

julie | skirts, trend alert | Tuesday, 10 June 2008

It seems that every season a sort of uniform is established. I have a theory that the fashion set holds a clandestine meeting in a smoke filled room somewhere and they determine what our uniform should consist of for that particular season. Although each fashionista will add her own special touch, the main elements remain the same.

To demonstrate this season’s uniform, I give you Ashley Olsen:

Blazer (in this case over-sized, but the silhouette may vary slightly), sheer or burnout tee, bandage skirt and gladiator style sandal. It is a good look right? Comfortable, stylish, easy and in keeping with the current mood in fashion.

Let’s see some other examples from some of your favorite bloggers shall we?

Exhibit A: Lulu of Everybody is Ugly. (Btw, check out chictopia.com if you haven’t already. It’s a lot of fun) Lulu switched out the gladiator for a shiny strappy sandal and ankle socks. Cute variation.

Exhibit B: Rumi from Fashiontoast. Rumi trades the over-sized blazer for a little leather jacket in these photos.

Exhibit C: Camille from Childhood Flames. Camille’s red hoodie adds a nice shot of color. She is also rocking the famous Heech sandal by Nine West that has been a big hit this summer.
